Nutrition 101

What is nutrition? Why do I need it?

Health guidance.org defines nutrition as; the processes involved in the taking in and the utilization of food substances by which growth, repair and maintenance of the body are accomplished. It involves ingestion, digestion, absorption and assimilation (supplies nutrients to cells.) Nutrients are stored by the body in various form sand drawn upon when the food intake is not sufficient.

Your food choices each day affect your health and how you feel today, tomorrow, and how you will feel in the future. Nutrition is the most important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can help you to maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of chronic diseases and promote your overall health.

The best way to receive ample nutrition is to incorporate more REAL and WHOLE foods in your daily diet. The catch is that the average person would need to eat a well-proportioned 2,100 calories just in fruits and vegetables a day to reach their basic nutritional needs. This is not yet including your daily macronutrients (carbs, proteins and fats) it’s safe to say nutritional supplements, such as vitamins are needed in most people’s daily regimen.

If nutrition is so important why is it overlooked, compared to exercise?

Nutrition is the most important science on earth, yet it is the most unwanted by some segments of our economic structure!

Point blank money is the biggest factor in nutrition and health information. When some good nutritionist or scientist comes up with an important health-contributing bit of scientific knowledge that does or can do harm to the drug, food, beverage and other big profit-making industries, these industries immediately hire the best nutritional research scientists that money can buy and in no time flat they come up with evidence that refutes the findings that could do umbrage to their products, states health guidance.org.

Nutritional Goals vs. Fitness Goals

When trying to lose weight, which is most important: diet or exercise? A smart majority of people understand that both monitoring food and beverage consumption and physical activity are the most vital part in weight maintenance and weight loss. The question for today is which activity will enable you to see better results in the long term and which will enable you to see quicker results. In my opinion the group of people that goes with hard exercise to try and counter-act the fact that they eat what they want, have gotten it all wrong. Together we will see what some other experts say.

How Weight Loss is Achieved

Weight loss encompasses a simple concept called energy balance. When you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight. Therefore, to lose weight you need to burn more calories and/or consume fewer calories. It is assumed that the combination of both of these methods is the best way to lose weight and improve your health.

ACEfitness.com states that members of the National Weight Control Registry are people who have lost weight and kept it off successfully for a minimum of one year. Of these people, 89% use a combination of diet and exercise. Their reports states that 10% have had success using diet alone and 1% used exercise alone. However, research shows that the combination of exercise and diet is more effective than diet alone. Furthermore, while diet alone helps you lose weight, it is exercise that improves your physical fitness.

Idealbrite.com also interviewed and expert named Donald Hensrud, M.D, he is the preventive medical specialist at the Mayo Clinic. Dr. Hensrud states that cutting calories is the more effective way of losing weight. In calculation 3,500 calories equals approximately 1 pound of fat. Cut 500 calories a day from your diet and you will shed a pound of fat in a week, far more quickly than trying to burn it off by exercising.

Food is the essential key in weight loss and disease prevention. Proper nutrition not only aids boosting metabolism but it will also provide the body with all the nutrients, hormones and vitamins that help maintain healthy organs and the bodies homeostasis.

Weight Misconceptions

It’s safe to say that while getting a good workout in, food plays the most important role. As a fitness trainer I see a lot of muscular yet unhealthy people who have muscles and no strength. It is my belief that in order to see longevity on this health and fitness journey we need to make a lifelong commitment and this starts with what we are fueling our bodies with.
